Cohere launches new AI models to bridge global language divide

Learn More Cohere today released two new open-weight models in its Aya project to close the language gap in foundation models.  Aya Expanse 8B and 35B, now available on Hugging Face, expands performance advancements in 23 languages. Cohere said in a blog post the 8B parameter model “makes breakthroughs more accessible to researchers worldwide,” while the 32B parameter model provides state-of-the-art multilingual capabilities.  The Aya project seeks to expand access to foundation models in more global languages than English. Cohere for AI, the company’s research arm, launched the Aya initiative last year. In February, it released the Aya 101 large language model (LLM), a 13-billion-parameter model covering 101 languages. Cohere for AI also released the Aya dataset to help expand access to other languages for model training.  Aya Expanse uses much of the same recipe used to build Aya 101.  “The improvements in Aya Expanse are the result of a sustained focus on expanding how AI serves languages around the world by rethinking the core building blocks of machine learning breakthroughs,” Cohere said. “Our research agenda for the last few years has included a dedicated focus on bridging the language gap, with several breakthroughs that were critical to the current recipe: data arbitrage, preference training for general performance and safety, and finally model merging.” Aya performs well Cohere said the two Aya Expanse models consistently outperformed similar-sized AI models from Google, Mistral and Meta.  Aya Expanse 32B did better in benchmark multilingual tests than Gemma 2 27B, Mistral 8x22B and even the much larger Llama 3.1 70B. The smaller 8B also performed better than Gemma 2 9B, Llama 3.1 8B and Ministral 8B.  Cohere developed the Aya models using a data sampling method called data arbitrage as a means to avoid the generation of gibberish that happens when models rely on synthetic data. Many models use synthetic data created from a “teacher” model for training purposes. However, due to the difficulty in finding good teacher models for other languages, especially for low-resource languages.  It also focused on guiding the models toward “global preferences” and accounting for different cultural and linguistic perspectives. Cohere said it figured out a way to improve performance and safety even while guiding the models’ preferences.  “We think of it as the ‘final sparkle’ in training an AI model,” the company said. “However, preference training and safety measures often overfit to harms prevalent in Western-centric datasets. Problematically, these safety protocols frequently fail to extend to multilingual settings.  Our work is one of the first that extends preference training to a massively multilingual setting, accounting for different cultural and linguistic perspectives.” Models in different languages The Aya initiative focuses on ensuring research around LLMs that perform well in languages other than English.  Many LLMs eventually become available in other languages, especially for widely spoken languages, but there is difficulty in finding data to train models with the different languages. English, after all, tends to be the official language of governments, finance, internet conversations and business, so it’s far easier to find data in English.  It can also be difficult to accurately benchmark the performance of models in different languages because of the quality of translations.  Other developers have released their own language datasets to further research into non-English LLMs. OpenAI, for example, made its Multilingual Massive Multitask Language Understanding Dataset on Hugging Face last month. The dataset aims to help better test LLM performance across 14 languages, including Arabic, German, Swahili and Bengali.  Cohere has been busy these last few weeks. This week, the company added image search capabilities to Embed 3, its enterprise embedding product used in retrieval augmented generation (RAG) systems. Empowering pilots Also in the Flexential survey, 43% of companies are seeing bandwidth shortages, and 34% are having problems scaling data center space and power to meet AI workload requirements. Other reported problems include unreliable connections and excessive latency. Only 18% of companies report no issues with their AI applications or workloads over the past 12 months. So it makes sense that 2023 was a year of AI pilots and proofs of concept, says Bharath Thota, partner in the digital and analytics practice at business consultancy, Kearney. And this year has been the year when companies have tried to scale these pilots up. “That’s where the challenge comes in,” he says. “This is not new to AI. But it’s amplified because the amount of data you need to access is significantly larger.” Not only does gen AI consume dramatically more data, but it also produces more data, which is something that companies often don’t expect. In addition, when companies create a model, it’s defined by its training data and weights, so keeping track of different versions of an AI model might require keeping copies of every individual training data set. It depends on the specific use case, says Thota. “Nobody has figured out what the best way is,” he says. “Everybody is learning as they’re iterating.” And all the infrastructure problems — the storage, connectivity, compute, and latency — will only increase next year. source

Reshape 2024: Amazon Business Is Ready For Its Closeup

While we haven’t talked too much about Amazon Business over the years, it’s been a quiet giant that has already generating over $35 billion in global sales after launching in 2015. That would make it the 300th largest company in the world with more than 10% of Amazon’s online retail business. It’s one of the “fastest-growing ventures in Amazon’s history,” and its size nearly doubles the company’s physical-store business. When we think about the next phase of Amazon retail, it’s really B2B. The company’s recent Reshape event in Dallas for users and partners answered a lot about this large and fast-growing part of the company. Here’s what I learned about this formidable part of Amazon. What Is Amazon Business, Really? It’s easy to think of Amazon Business as a better version of an office supply store like Staples, but that would be selling it short. Yes, it does sell a lot of pens and office supplies (BIC and Uniball were two of Reshape’s biggest sponsors). But just as Amazon.com is way more than books, Amazon Business is much more than a single category. It serves 6 million business accounts around the world with everything imaginable, from medical devices for hospitals and doctor’s offices to packaging and paper supplies for restaurant groups and toner cartridges for schools. The Amazon Business Superpower: Physically And Financially Large Shipments Of Supplies That Ride Amazon’s Fulfillment Network To Commercial Addresses Amazon Business is the polar opposite of Amazon.com, which was built on small one-off transactions to consumers everywhere in the US and much of the world, in turn helping to ingrain the brand in the minds of shoppers everywhere. By contrast, Amazon Business leverages: Large shipments. Amazon is often delivering pallets to enterprise customers such as Aramark. Amazon’s fulfillment network. Amazon already has a dense warehouse footprint, predictive shipping capabilities, and an offering to provide those services to marketplace sellers. Commercial addresses. Amazon is able to use large trucks that pull into loading docks, drop off those pallets, and get the “delivery density” critical for carrier efficiency. This is the dream of any carrier. It even restocks vending machines, which I would bet — with Amazon’s creativity — that the company may make even more efficient with Flex drivers. And that was the key message of the Reshape event: Amazon Business is targeting large enterprises and embedding itself in major procurement systems such as Coupa to bring its commerce flywheel to B2B purchases. As Amazon Business encroaches on enterprise customers with more business purchases, it will invariably need the sales leads and contacts from its AWS business, possibly selling overlapping products and services in the future. Internal channel conflict is a feature — not a bug — of Amazon’s org structure as it empowers small teams to move fast to build new businesses. Where To Next For Amazon Business — And B2B E-Commerce? Given the still-behind state of most other B2B e-commerce sites, Amazon Business may not even need enterprise companies for a while. Today, Amazon Business stands out as a juggernaut with an inherent competitive advantage just with small and medium enterprises. It reminds me of its position in the online advertising world with Amazon Ads. It wouldn’t be surprising if the attention it gets in the future is just as great. Going forward, brands selling to procurement leaders will have no choice but to develop their Amazon Business strategy. Other companies should think of the lessons of Amazon Business: how to leverage existing assets to effectively extend to new categories rapidly.
